Barney was sick of looking the same every day. He had a boring job, and didn’t want to wear his work clothes outside of work. He realized that he needed to give himself a new look in order to feel good about himself again. So he started by getting rid of all his old clothes- well, he donated them anyway- and then went shopping for some casual outfits that would make him feel more confident at work!
After wearing these clothes for awhile, Barney noticed an immediate change in how people reacted to him: they were friendlier, more open with their opinions- even going out of their way sometimes just so they could talk to him about something! One day at lunchtime, someone stopped by our table and starting a conversation with him about football. Barney had no clue what was going on, but it felt good to know that people were actually interested in him and his life!
After a few months of this new look, Barney noticed something else: he was making more money at work- not crazy amounts or anything, just enough for some small indulgences like pizza every now and then. He couldn’t figure out why the clothes seemed to be helping his mood all these other things too! It wasn’t until someone mentioned that “people see you as confident” when they saw him wearing those outfits from time to time- which is basically the same thing we always say here at our store each day-“dress better than your average joe!”
A few months later, Barney’s boss finally noticed the change. “Barney,” he said one day, looking at him thoughtfully from over his glasses on the tip of his nose, “I think you’re wearing your clothes a little better these days.” He paused for a moment before adding: “You should wear them more often.”
Bigger leaps in confidence continued to happen when people started asking about what he was doing with himself and how they could do something similar! One time someone asked if he had ever considered modeling- which made Barney laugh out loud because that sounded absurd coming from this guy who never took care of himself or did anything interesting with his life. He didn’t know how it happened but suddenly everyone seemed interested in him and his lifestyle.
Barney’s Story: I always thought the way people looked was a very subjective thing, what one person likes might not be someone else’s cup of tea- something Barney knew all too well as he spent years trying to find himself in other people’s clothes or hairstyles that didn’t suit him at all. He had been through so many incarnations over the years but nothing really fit right until some time ago when he stumbled on this guy who taught barbering skills lessons from home and decided to give it a shot because hey, you never know! The whole process was new for him; learning how to cut hair made sense since he’d been cutting his own for ages but there were still things he found difficult at first like how to tie a knot or even just hold the scissors right. Learning barbering was tough and he was happy when his hair started coming in because it meant that soon, this process would be over- but then again, there’s always more to learn!
The one thing Barney didn’t expect from barbering is how much of an emotional impact it had on him too; as someone who had never really felt like they belonged anywhere for long periods of time, being able to give people what they want with their hair made Barney feel accomplished and allowed him to forge deep connections between himself and others. Nowadays you can still find him cutting hair somewhere up north where he might have been born if not for the barbering
